Interesting myths of American history

One of the most interesting in American history, history that never happened. The stories we have learned in school, we often read in history books or just heard so many times we have experienced as a fact, but never actually happened. Some of my favorites.

Myth # 1: In April 1775, Paul Revere traveled the streets of Boston to Lexington, shouting "The British are coming."

First, there is little Paul Revere never shouted likely the words "The British Are Coming" because they often cross areas of the British army patrols and, in fact most settlers of the time themselves as British. The purpose of the trip was to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams in Lexington, where at that time. Reported others along the way, but not screaming in the streets.

In addition, Paul Revere was not the only driver to make the trip. William Dawes and Samuel Prescott also has traveled and Prescott was in fact the only three to go to Concordia (the location of their arsenals, where they believed the British army was ultimately directed.) Revere was captured and detained by a British patrol and ran out of horses to walk back to Lexington. Revere was very little known, even before Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote his famous poem in 1863. Poem was never intended to be a history lesson, but that's what most Americans remember.

Interesting Myth # 2: Betsy Ross invented the first American flag

Legend has it that General George Washington visited Betsy Ross in his shop in Philadelphia, in June 1776 where they discussed various flag designs and settled on seven red and white stripes and thirteen stars arranged in a circle. Although Washington has shown that I was in Philadelphia in June 1776 makes no mention of this in his diary.

We know New Year's Day 1776, Washington flew a flag at their camp of thirteen red and white stripes, with two crossings of Boston (British Familiar symbols). Early documents a flag consisting of thirteen red and white stripes and thirteen stars on a blue background has been in a resolution of the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

It was not until 1870 - almost 100 years after the fact - that the legend began when told by the small Betsy Ross J. Son William Canby. Supposedly, she had told this story in 1836. Although it is possible that Betsy Ross sewing the flag, there is no evidence in support of its application as designed.

Interesting Myth # 3: When George Washington was a young boy, he shot his father's cherry tree and when confronted by his father, he replied with something like "I can not tell a lie, my father, you know I can not tell a lie! I did it with my hatchet cut."

In fact, there is no evidence that this has happened. History told (Pastor) Mason Weems said many other unsubstantiated stories about George Washington in a book entitled "The Life of George Washington, with curious anecdotes equally honorable to him, and copies of his young companions."

Why Why has Weems said these stories? Well, besides being a pastor, Weems was a writer and knew these stories would be popular and sell. He was right about this. After the first impression, is passed by at least 82 known editions of history forever cementing the legend cherry.

 Baltimore Orioles Ironman Lithograph

Baltimore Orioles Ironman Lithograph

$174.99

The drive to compete. The drive to excel. Every day. Every game. A local kid from Maryland broke into the big leagues as a third baseman with the Baltimore Orioles in 1981. The following season, on may 30, 1982, in the team?s 46th game of the year, Cal Ripken, Jr. Was penciled into the starting lineup. It would be sixteen years and 2,632 games before the Baltimore Orioles would have a starting line-up without his name in it. He shattered the longevity record of 2,130 games set by the Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig - a feat that most baseball observers thought was unattainable by any other player. Cal Ripken Jr., the ultimate competitor, transformed the position of shortstop. He was a gold glove caliber fielder who brought power to the position of shortstop like few before him could do, and he had the uncanny ability to come up with the biggest hits when the lights were shining their brightest. The litany of his achievements is amazing: rookie of the year, two time American League most valuable player, and member of the 1983 World Champion Orioles. One of the greatest ambassadors the game of baseball has ever seen, he had the great fortune to play with his brother as a teammate and his father as a coach and manager. Cal Ripken, Jr.?s place in baseball history was cemented by his overwhelming selection into baseball?s Hall of Fame in 2007. Limited edition to 888 pieces.

The Claddagh RingThe Irish Claddagh Rings are probably the most culturally rich pieces of jewelry ever recorded in history. The meaning, significance and history of the Claddagh ring has a rich ancient past that dates back to over 300 years.A small fishing village in Galway, Ireland called the Claddagh was where the tradition of the Claddagh rings first started. The word Claddagh itself comes from the Irish term 'An Cladach' that means a 'flat stony shore'. The crown symbolizes Loyalty, the heart - Love and the hands represent Friendship. The meaning and significance of the Claddagh ring is not just in the crown, heart and clasping hands, it also extends to the hand on which the ring is worn and the direction in which the crown on the ring points. Traditionally, in the case of a married or engaged person, Claddagh rings are worn on the left hand with the crown pointing towards the heart. For a person willing to consider love, the ring is traditionally worn on the right hand with the crown pointing away from the heart.About The MakersSolvar Ltd. a family owned Irish company established in 1941 and based in the heart of Dublin, Ireland has evolved to become recognized as a world leader in the design and manufacture of Celtic Jewelery. With over six decades of tradition and experience in the jewelery business, Solvar has a strong commitment to quality, design & workmanship to the highest standards. All Solvar jewelery is individually designed, drawing inspiration from Ireland's rich past and unique icons; the Claddagh, Celtic Cross, Shamrock and intricate Celtic Knot work. The plant was reputed to have mystic powers in that its petals will stand upright to warn of a approaching storm. The shamrock remains Ireland's most famous symbol. The shamrock is also commonly associated with the symbol of luck. In studying Celtic history, scholars have discovered that the shamrock was a charm to ward away evil.
