I'm trying to convert a collection of DVDs of films old and I am a novice, this type of DVD should I buy?

Yes bulk DVD's are the best. Try to get the DVD-R Try to avoid re-writable DVD + R and also all - DVD-RW / DVD + RW. Also avoid any DualLayer or Blu Ray, as it will be more expensive.
