Kingdom Heaven
What did Jesus mean when he said, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand"?
Matthew 4:17: From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
What does it mean to repent? Is repentance required for citizenship in the kingdom of heaven? If so, is this teaching compatible with the idea that all we need to reach heaven is faith, or do we need actions in addition to faith?
Gotta have actions.
Repentance involves more than just outward things it is a heart thing.
Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. (Acts 8:22)
Not just faith but deeds also, repent (mind change with abhorrence to past sins), turn (to God in obedience), repentance (evidence of the changed mind).
… and even to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds appropriate to repentance. (Acts 26:20)
Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lamp stand out of its place—unless you repent. (Revelation 2:5)
For thus the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, has said, "In repentance and rest you will be saved, In quietness and trust is your strength." But you were not willing, (Isaiah 30:15)
There is a change, after repentance it is evidenced by fruit, not sin.
Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance; (Matthew 3:8)
John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. (Mark 1:4)
By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
